Lumen means (beside the light current) the “inside”, the interior space of blood vessels, organs, cell bodies. It describes a vastness of space (“room of light”), surrounded by a room outside.

Installation

An empty room, ideally a windowless/darkened hall will be filled with old floor lamps in all sizes and shapes. The arrangement of the lamps conveys the image of an abandoned vegetation, a “forest of lamps” with clearings and trails to inspect and explore. The lamps are wired and connected with LEDs. By means of illumination and sound installation sequences will be performed which will create associations and impressions on the visitor and in addition can be influenced interactively.

The artistic focus and thematic examination of the installation addresses the intermixture, influence and dependency on living spaces (habitats).

Details concerning the installation

The installation deals with the intermixture, influence and dependency on living spaces (habitats). The empty, dark room is point of departure for the installation. It embodies the dark state of “nothingness” of the BEGINNING that does not yet enable an “existence” as a habitat. A large number of old floor lights in all kind of sizes and variations fill up this emptiness and form the content, act as functionaries and are starting point for the association. Estranged, out of place and in its multitude taken out of the familiar context, its purpose starts changing and expanding during the observation. The breaking of this context creates tension and a sort of irritation by mixing associations and expectations - stepping out of the ordinary.

The layout of the lamps evokes the image of an abandoned vegetation. A little forest, an accumulation of trees and bushes, the reproduction of a natural living space (habitat) with deliberately positioned tracks into it and through it. The overall impression of the installation is completed by the light cycle of these illuminated lamps.

Wherever light serves in a natural habitat (living space) as a source, impulse and escape of the NOTHINGNESS, the emptiness, will experience a reversal in this installation. The associated forest – a living space depending on light - will itself become an emitting source of light enabling life. Actually a utopian idea, the wishful thinking/dream of the ideal solution. An artificial, self-sustaining organism that disengages from its own dependency. Soundtracks and noises will add additional images, harmonious with the light cycle, but contrarily they act as “disruptive factors” resulting in associations.

Over the time it will lead to an ultimate intermixture, respectively a decoupling of naturally and artificially created human living spaces (habitats).

The cycle of this light and soundtrack - being the fundamental marker- forms the basis for influencing factors. The visitors, exploring the artificial forest, will be captured at various places via sensors and their movements will be directly transmitted to the lamps. When entering the installation the visitors will release themselves from their passivity of spectators and an “OUTSIDE” as well as an “INSIDE” will be created. As soon as they move into the system - the forest of lamps - they will become a part of the installation. On the basis of their activities and actions they will influence the system.

Lumen – Eine Einheit, die Stärke des Lichts. Lumen – Eine Definition, das Innere, der Raum, die Weite, das Lichte von Blutgefäßen, Organen und Zellkörpern gegen ein Außen.

Johannes Rass intermediale Installation LUMEN greift nicht nur beide Definitionen des Begriffs auf, sie verknüpft und verdichtet sie vielmehr – scheinbar unbemerkt, zu einer ganzheitlichen Raum- und
Sinneserfahrung. Mit dutzende Lampen, strahlend auf verschiedenen Ebenen, am Boden, zur Decke empor
leuchtend, dunkle Ecken erhellend, entnommen ihrem ursprünglichen Wirkungsraum, schafft der Künstler einen Wald aus Licht und immer auch Schatten, eine Kakophonie für das Auge, die sich in die Netzhaut brennt und dramaturgisch weitergetragen wird von der Ebene des Sounds, korrespondierend, gegensätzlich, mal laut und mitreißend, mal zurückhaltend und sanft. 

Licht und Dunkelheit werden hier nicht als Gegensatzpaar begriffen, sondern vielmehr als der Ursprung, aus dem sich alles ergibt. Die BetrachterInnen werden zu (interaktiven) AkteurInnen, zu Existenzen in einem
geschlossenen System. Ihr Sein repräsentiert über Lichtstimmungen und Farbcodes: Der sanfte Rotschimmer einer Gebärmutterwand, das gleißende Weiß apokalyptischer Träume von Verlorenheit und Sterilität, donneruntermaltes Blau wie ein rasch aufziehendes Gewitter auf freiem Feld. Johannes Rass Installation LUMEN - Ein Spiel mit dem Raum: Eine Inter-Aktion mit dem Ort, ein Innen gegen ein Außen.
